Ethnicity

“Mainstream churches have been reluctant or unwilling to engage in honest dialogue on the issues that stem from ethnic diversity.”
Rosemary Mallett, contributor to Ethnicity – The Inclusive Church Resource, and member of General Synod of the Church of England.

Inclusive Church seeks to raise awareness of the need to create a church where those from different ethnic backgrounds are enabled to feel welcome.

“In general the debate on ethnicity and the mainstream, church has centred around inclusion, on counting people in. In many cases such inclusion has been focused on people of colour joining in and trying not to be seen to be different to the majority. However, inclusion works best when everyone can most be themselves. Inclusion should not diminish difference but rather celebrate it.”

Inclusive Churches are encouraged to participate in Racial Justice Sunday which is observed in September each year.

Ethnicity: The Inclusive Church Resource

The Inclusive Church Resource book series is published by Darton Longman and Todd.

Designed as resource books for churches, each book has an introduction, theological reflection, stories from lived experience and a practical resource section

The books in the series include Disability by John Hull, Mental Health by Jean Vanier and John Swinton.
Sexuality by Susannah Cornwall, Poverty by Susan Durber, Ethnicity by Michael Jagessar and Gender by Rosemary Lain Priestley.

The book on Ethnicity has an introduction by Inclusive Church trustee Rosemarie Mallett. The theology of ethnicty is by Michael Jagessar, former Moderator of the United Reformed Church.

This is a really exciting project for Inclusive Church and we are proud to be working in partnership with DLT.

A comment in from someone who has read the first 2 books:

"Have just received the first books, and dived into one of them. They are excellent, and all churches should have them for the clergy, and PCC."

Books can be ordered from the publishers, or download an order form here
